Common challenges in the heat exchanger industry persist. What is Defon doing about them?

As general‑purpose mechanical equipment, compressors are widely used in critical sectors such as air separation, coal chemical, petrochemical, metallurgy, electronics and semiconductors, machinery manufacturing, and new energy. The heat exchanger is a core component that ensures the safe and efficient operation of compressors — it acts like the compressor's "thermoregulatory system," constantly safeguarding stable equipment operation.

However, compressors used in different industries have varying structural types and operating principles, leading to widely different heat‑exchanger requirements. For a long time, common technical challenges such as low thermal efficiency, high energy consumption, susceptibility to corrosion, high noise levels, and short service life have been key factors limiting the overall performance of compressor units, and remain a continuous focus for the entire industry.

As a specialized enterprise with decades of experience in this field, Defon Heat Exchanger has been driving technological innovation and product iteration from the ground up, starting with fundamental theoretical research and manufacturing process optimization. In collaboration with Wuhan University of Technology, we have successfully developed a novel four‑lobe curved vortex generator and an anti‑clogging perforated petal‑shaped turbulator, achieving substantial performance improvements in heat transfer efficiency and energy savings.

Rethinking "How to Transfer Heat Efficiently" — Starting from a Single Fin

The working principle of a heat exchanger is that two fluids at different temperatures (e.g., gas and liquid) exchange heat through a metal wall. The limitation of conventional heat exchangers lies in the fact that as fluid flows over the tube surface, a relatively static "thermal insulation layer" forms. The key to heat‑exchange efficiency is the "flow state" of air as it passes over the fins. Traditional fins have smooth surfaces, and the air adjacent to the fin surface tends to form an almost stationary insulating layer — like putting a "thermal jacket" on the tube, which actually impedes heat transfer.

The core function of Defon's newly developed four‑lobe curved vortex generator and anti‑clogging perforated petal‑shaped turbulator is to continuously generate vortices that constantly "strip away" this thermal insulation layer.1Enhanced turbulence, flow diversion, and jet impingement

The four‑lobe curved surface acts like a miniature "turbine blade," creating intense vortices in the air; the perforated petals function as "nozzles," accelerating air into high‑velocity jets that impinge on the tube wall. Together, they continuously disrupt the insulating layer on the fin surface, allowing heat to flow smoothly.

2Enhanced helical mixing near the wall

Instead of flowing straight past the fins, the air moves in a spiral motion like a "tornado," thoroughly mixing hot and cold air and achieving a more uniform temperature distribution, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the heat exchanger.

3Reduced thermal resistance between tube and fin

In addition, the design also achieves a reduction in thermal resistance. The lower the thermal resistance, the smoother the heat transfer — the heat exchanger "breathes" more freely, further enhancing its overall heat dissipation capability.

Practical validation shows that the combined effect of these flow optimizations translates into: an average heat transfer coefficient increase of 10.9%. This technology is recognized as world‑leading and has been awarded the First Prize of the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.

From Lab to Industrialization — Defon Keeps Moving Forward

Today, Defon has widely applied this technology to its fin‑tube heat exchanger products, covering air separation, coal chemical, petrochemical, metallurgy, new energy, and other industries. It performs excellently under a variety of harsh operating conditions, effectively ensuring the efficient, reliable, and long‑term stable operation of compressor units.

Bringing a technology from R&D to full commercialization requires sustained investment and accumulation. Defon continues to innovate, overcoming technical hurdles, and has achieved significant improvements in key performance indicators such as heat transfer efficiency, flow resistance, and manufacturing costs, providing both standard and customized heat‑exchanger solutions that deliver tangible, quantifiable value to our customers.

At the intersection of hot and cold, Defon is working tirelessly as industry's "temperature guardian" through continuous innovation and practical improvements.
